International Bodies

Letter from the USG:

Hi, I’m Mariana Quiroga and I will be the Under-Secretary General for International Bodies for WAMUNC XIV! These bodies constitute the major components of the modern international governing structure and extend to nearly all aspects of life as global citizens. This year we will have seven different committees within the group of International Bodies. It is exciting to see how these seven committees encompass social, cultural, judicial and many other aspects of life and development. My role in the
conference is to make sure that these committees function perfectly, both in terms of academics and logistics. I am here to support all of the seven wonderful Chairs and Vice Chairs, and I will also be the fastest way of communication between the Chairs and the Secretary General. Starting with the United Nations General Assembly First Committee, also known as DISEC, we will deal with disarmament and related international security questions. We will also have the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which currently plays a major role in international security regulation and deals with cooperation or lack of, within countries in the nuclear field. The third committee will be the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, also known as UNESCO that works towards achieving respect, dialogue, peace and tolerance amongst different civilizations, cultures and peoples. The fourth committee is the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) which originally started to help
those Europeans who had been displaced by World War II; currently, it aids refugees and those affected by war all around the world. Additionally, we will have the United Nations Development Program, UNDP, which seeks to develop nations politically, economically and socially. UNDP aims to fight poverty, build democratic societies, protect the environment, and empower women amongst others. Our sixth committee is the recognized Security Council which aims to maintain international peace and
security with its fifteen active countries including 5 vetoes. Last, but definitely not least, we will have a committee which in my personal opinion is one of the most interesting ones: The International Court of Justice, or ICJ, which is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. The ICJ seeks to settle international legal disputes between countries, based on international law. This variety of committees will set the stage for great debates, great deliberations and will let each and every delegate express their opinions on different topics. The seven committees all include current problems, crisis and situations which the world is facing and WAMUNC XIV will make every participant think about this reality but also come up with possible solutions to these problems! I have no doubt this will be a great conference!
